Water Pressure Problems

As water softener experts one of the questions which should always be considered is

Low pressure tap

Q. “is this going to effect the performance of my plumbing system?”

A. Yes there will always be some reduction in flow and pressure when installing additional plumbing fittings and a water softener is no exception to this rule. However with a properly matched & designed water softener installation the reduction in performance will be negligible.

There are any number of other factors which affect performance and all too often these are overlooked when equipment is being specified.

Many homes and other premises do not have enough water flow or pressure to operate the plumbing equipment installed and sadly it is the householder who suffers from the poor design with problems like:

  • Showers which stop or run cold when someone uses water elsewhere in the house
  • Bath tubs which take forever to fill
  • Garden sprinklers which are more like garden dribblers
  • Electric showers which automatically shut down to prevent scolding

How many houses ring to the cries of “who flushed the loo? I'm in the shower” each day?

The Problems are becoming more frequent too...

More building density means more people sharing the existing mains distribution network. More & more existing homes changing to high performance “Mains Fed” plumbing systems each trying to draw the water faster than traditional “Tank Fed Systems”.

Water supply companies under increasing pressure to reduce leakage from the regulator - One very cost effective way to reduce the amount of water you lose through any given leak is to reduce the pressure of the water in the network. The statutory minimum pressure your water company is obliged to maintain is only around 1 Bar (15psi) with a flow of 10 litres per minute.

Imagine filling your bath at a rate of one small bucket each minute - not much use to the modern home. It is in response to these problems and the tendency of some plumbers to point the finger of blame at the water softener that Friendly Water started to develop solutions to the Pressure & Flow problems.
